Alfalfa Weevil
Sheridan County Weed and Pest District strongly discourages the use of pyrethroid-based insecticides such as Mustang MAXX for the treatment of alfalfa weevils. This is because extensive alfalfa weevil resistance to this type of treatment has been documented in Sheridan County. Continuing to use these insecticides will result in further decreases in effectiveness and will lengthen the amount of time it will take to overcome resistance.
Instead, Sheridan County suggests that an integrated pest management program be implemented with Steward insecticide as the chemical component. Integrated pest management involves a rotation of different treatment types (chemical, mechanical, cultural, biological). Using more than one tool in our toolbox contributes to long-term management of target species and can both help prevent and hedge against the potential loss of availability of tools - as we have seen with pyrethroids.
Sheridan County Weed and Pest has decided that continuing to cost-share for the treatment of alfalfa weevils is no longer responsible from a financial standpoint or from a long-term pest control standpoint. As such, SCWP will not be cost-sharing for Steward or any other insecticide for the treatment of alfalfa weevils anymore. For more info, please contact our office.

Watch Out!
Sheridan County has Alfalfa Weevils that are resistant to the insecticide Mustang Maxx. We strongly recommend that it is not used for treatment because it may not be effective and will promote further resistance.
